Media backed up with the following software products can be read with this version of Backup Exec and restored to the device from which it was backed up (or redirected to a compatible device). In addition, Backup Exec can read media backed up with products that record media in the following tape formats:
- Microsoft Tape Format (MTF)
- QIC113
- SIDF
- ArcServe Format
- Sytos Plus Format
Backup Exec also supports restoring NetWare SMS data to non-SMS volumes. For example, data backed up with Backup Exec for NetWare or Novell's SBackup can be restored to the Windows NT backup server or another network share.
Note: Software compressed data backed up with products other than Backup Exec for Windows NT cannot be restored. Password-protected media cannot be restored.

Restoring ARCserve for NetWare Tapes
Backup Exec allows you to restore data from tapes backed up with Cheyenne's ARCserve for NetWare versions 4.x and 5.x. To restore data from an ARCserve for NetWare tape:
1. Catalog the tape using Backup Exec's "Catalog a Tape" feature. During cataloging, Backup Exec reports file formats that it can read. Files that cannot be read do not appear in the catalogs. The alternate label that appears in the Backup Exec catalog comes from the session description used by ARCserve.
Note: On-tape catalogs are not supported on tapes created by other vendors' backup products. Because of this, cataloging ARCserve tapes takes considerably longer than cataloging a tape made with Backup Exec.
2. Set up a restore job targeted to the destination server or workstation.
Note: When restoring from ARCserve for NetWare tapes, no SMS, bindery or directory services information will be restored. Data backed up using ARCserve's SMS feature cannot be restored through Backup Exec's Novell Storage Management Services tree view (see, "Novell Storage Management Services tree view" on page 96). The restore of all flat data files can be targeted through the Entire Network view, or through a user-defined share.
Data Format Support When Restoring ARCserve Media
Following are limitations and restrictions for different platforms when restoring ARCserve tapes with Backup Exec.
Notes on Restoring ARCserve Media
Supported Operations - Media containing ARCserve backups can be overwritten; however, backup append operations are not supported. All Backup Exec media utility functions (except for verify) can be performed on ARCserve media.
Trustee Information - This information is not restored, so there is no chance of overwriting existing trustee information.
File Attributes - Only DOS file attributes are restored. These attributes are READ ONLY, HIDDEN, and SYSTEM.
DOS Files in the DOS name space can be cataloged and restored.
OS/2 Files in the OS/2 name space can be cataloged and restored. Long filenames and Extended Attributes for OS/2 files are not restored. Macintosh Files in the Macintosh name space can be cataloged and restored.
Long filenames and resource forks for Macintosh files are not restored.
Windows NT Backups of NT workstations are not supported.
SMS ARCserve supports the use of SMS to back up data. Files backed up using ARCserve's SMS option cannot be restored. ARCserve can be configured so that backup sets contain files in both ARCserve format and SMS format. When this option is used, all files that are ARCserve format appear in the catalog and can be restored.
Databases ARCserve databases cannot be restored. |
